Retirement Age
Kishore BNov 29, 23
Is it good to have a retirement age after which one can stop working? This has both good and bad side.
If there is a fixed age for retirement, the younger group can join the workforce and possible contribute better in most cases. However, the experienced person can also contribute special activities which require a lot of experience. For example: when we go to a doctor, particularly for critical illness, we always look for an experienced doctor. Further, retirement compulsory is a type of discrimination based on age.
Different opinions are invited.

I am 63 recently joined as a part timer. I have no problem working with younger people, many of my mangers are less than half of my age, I don;t feel any bad. However, there is a person who speaks in the same native language I speak He started to call me "DADU" It means grandfather, So, I call him Grandson. He said he is 53.

because of the sense of entitlement that the young have these days, which preclude many of them from completing required education standards, the older generation who have education and experience, if they have the physical and mental capability to continue worker, should continue to do so until they want. Not be forced to retiree at an arbitary age.

No one is forced to retire. Many work way past retirement age. That "age" is when you may recieve a government entitlement if you feel ready to give up work.

I am 67yrs in good health and really enjoy the work I currently do. I love my current role a lot as it is very challenging and rewarding and I think I add a lot of value to the company I work for. There are staff my age and older that are also adding good value to the company and there are some that are not. I plan to keep working as long as I am in good health (body and mind) and I enjoy the job. The second either one of those becomes an issue I am retired.

Retirement Age as such depends on what a person has been doing for a job over the years, a brick layer for instant might work for years without problems then there are those that end up with arthritis in the fingers or bad backs from lifting heavy loads off bricks or cement. Doctors seem to work as long as they wish but there are restrictions for surgeons once they reach a certain age but I am not sure why other than the profession has decided to do so because there is no way of knowing how old age will affect a person's capacity to do certain operations. I only know that because some specialists I used to see told me so.

I don't agree an ' experienced doctor ' or ' good doctor ' should be determined by ' age '. Some ' older doctors ' are not the ' best doctors '. There are plenty of ' younger aged doctors ' that are better then the ' older aged doctors '. So experience by age is not always a good indication of experience. Some people study medicine at a very young age while others enter it at an older age. But a retirement age is a good thing and is considered as a guide and is not compolsury. Which that should be the case, there are some retirement aged people that can and are willing to continue to work in some degree. If able they should be allowed to work and not be discriminated against. That's just my thoughts, I don't expect everyone to agree with me.

Retirement is a personal thing. When you can afford to stop paid work, if you have hobbies should you retire and the most important, are you well enough to keep working beyond your Government working age?.

Think it all depends on what interests you have besides work. Yes much of the older persons knowledge & experience is lost to an organisation but then u have the young generation with different ideas & tech know how etc

I think it depends on the person, their job, and their financial situation. Not everyone is lucky enough to have a retirement plan or have been able to save for the future. Many self-employed people haven't even paid into Social Security so they have very little to retire on. Everyone should be smart enough when young to work out how they can retire early and have time to enjoy life. If that's possible, then I think they should definitely do it. Maybe the answer is for the schools to give their students that knowledge and assist them to be able to do this. I know our school offers very little assistance to students for planning a good future. If they wait until their senior year, it's too late for them to have gotten the knowledge they need for what they want to do. I know it's hard for students to choose a job/career. Many have no special interests, and they are so young that they will probably change at some point. I know, looking back, that I would have chosen a backup plan just in case. I made a good choice and great pay and benefits, but when they wasn't working for me mentally, I had nothing else to rely on. If I had the education, I would have moved on to something that was along the line of helping people. I would have loved possibly working with the deaf. I never would have dreamed of that when I was young. Everyone needs more than one skill set to rely on. My best friend worked as a beautician at home while she raised her kids. Then she went to nursing school. Therefore, she could have done several things. Leave your options open. I wish everyone a great life with an awesome retirement. Working so hard, everyone deserves that.

at retirement age u r eligible for a pension, its entirely up to u if u decide u want to continue working. sadly there are more and more people who cannot survive on their pensions so have no choice but to keep working. and that sux given these hard working people have contributed to the economy for 4 decades or more.

When it comes to retirement, I believe it all depends on the individual. To the people that have worked hard all their lives deserve to retire but then again I just seen an air show where one of the pilots were 86!

The retirement age should start at 65 and then be very flexible as each person should be able to decide when they want to retire. It depends on their health and fitness, nobody should be made to retire unless they want to.

There comes a time when enough is enough. You are ready to retire. By then you have tutored the younger people to take your place. But, you will know when the time is right.

While there is a retirement age it isn't compulsory in Australia. There are however compulsory retirement ages for certain professions such as airline pilots. Some people are happy to retire when they reach the age while others decide to carry on. I guess it depends upon the state of your health or whether you need the money.

Unfortunately I had to retire at 61 years due to chronic back pain. I can't walk without a walking stick now but I've been unable to get any help from the government. They want me to go for tests which is a 5 - 6 hour drive which I can't do anymore. If I was able to, I'd still be working but, unfortunately, it's never going to happen.

My son-in-law is pretty much in the same situation. He has Parkinsons and has had a pace maker fitted. He can't work due to the shakes and his inability to get his hands to do exactly what he wants them to but Centrelink says it isn't a disease and isn't terminal and forces him to keep seeking work. He needs an income but all he could get was the NDIS which while helping with doctors bills and helping him with his medical appointments etc. doesn't pay the mortgage. He has had to give up his driving licence which doesn't help when trying to find work.

It's such a debilitating disease. I'm so sorry about your son and I hope they finally give him what he deserves so he doesn't have to stress anymore.

I have already retired as where we live there isn't much work and I honestly don't want to work so we manage with what we have and make things work out for us. I can't get a pension because I am not of pension age and we live off my husband's pension. I do bring in a small amount from doing surveys and interest and from a divorce agreement which has about 9 years to go. The thing that gets me is when the agreement was drawn up the house wasn't worth the 1.5 million dollars it is worth today. Oh well money does to make people happy and if you have. a lot of it then you are always worried some one is going to scam it out of you.

This was too good of an offer, so I took it.

In France, I believe the retirement age adjusts according to the type of work you do. If you wish to work longer you should be able to, but if your job is labour intensive, then earlier retirement options should be available. Even in sedentary jobs, cognitive decline may be the main concern. Dare I say look at Joe Biden!

Retirement takes a lot of planning, if possible. Health, money, activities etc. have to be factored into the equation. Retirement is fun times, to be spent with your partner and growing families, not necessarily bad health and being poor. My mother retired on just the pension and lived a fairly relaxing lifestyle with grandchildren staying, bus trips through the community and with family. She enjoyed her roast lunch on Sundays and fish n chips on Fridays. Loved a cold beer on a hot day and enjoyed her ice cream for supper. She didn't have the best health, but never complained and always, always had her arms open for her children and grandchildren. After raising 6 children on her own I believe she was entitled to have a retirement. Discrimination, no, just a little bit of time left to enjoy her family and friends before a long, long deserved sleep! Love you mum!🍺💐

I do enjoy my photography, painting, and my garden, so I have more time for that now. And I can spend more time visiting family while going on road trips. In short, I have more time now to do the things I prefer to do than chew up another day on a job. If you can afford to retire, then why not. There is more to life than work. Ultimately it's up to the individual. Sadly though due to todays economic climate, available finances or a lack thereof, usually dictates that decision.

Which I did emphasising the fact that it was just an EQNQUIRY and promptly got a respnse very close what what I had calculated. I had a word with my Manager that if there was a young person who was on the same Level as I was and had been given their "marching orders" I may be interested in doing a "swap" so the younger person would have a job. That was all verbal and I made it clear that I was just enquiring so just kep on merriyly working away. THEN I received a letter in the mail stating that my "JOB VAS REDUNDANT" and if I did not take up the VSP or was not able to find a another position within the (Government) within a year I would lose everything and also that VSPs were going to get lower payouts!!! The sods allowed me 3mths more work and I needed to take the first job offered or lose the lot. I suffered with them another 3months and couldn't wait to get out the door and NEVER RETURN again!

The world is aging and I am one of the very last of the "baby boomers" and I turned 59 yesterday. The last BB's to turned 59 will be on December 31st 2023. There are many BB's still working but I am not one of them and my government at least has picked up the bill for my Disability Support Pension for the past several years, and I paid towards this during the 30+ years I was able to work, but I don't expect to recieve anything from my government in the years to come. Australia has had a healthy economy and it was so until 2020, but 10's of 1000's of people lost everything during the pandemic years and instead of being able to be self funded retires in future they will need government assistance to live. Europe is in a far worse state due to mass migration of mostly single men of fighting age and countries are being bankrupted trying to feed and house them, even excluding the effect on crime and other related matters. The US has a debt of 33 TRILLION $ and goes into more debt daily yet still continues to have an open border. If you CAN have a nice Christmas with family and friends this year then do because by December 2024 it's going to be a LOT worse. I don't believe, and there's lots of evidence for my opinion, that the 401K's and other Pension funds, will have ANY money left in them at all when the person who owns them will need to access them. We are heading for a global depression and the steps to bring it to fruition are well underway! Stock up before the supply lines become unavailable and food dearer and more scarce than it is already. I think maybe having a suggested retirement age but not stopping people from working, if they are still fit, is a good idea. Let's face it - not many people can afford NOT to work and the pension for aged people isn't enough for many people.

Our Government decided, without asking how the working classes felt about it, that retirement age would be fixed at 65. Over the first year we had a number of men who had to retire due to this pronouncement. Within six months, a third of these retirees had died. We lost engineers, fitters and turners, mechanics, none of who were noted as having ha serious health problems. It was my senior staff's and my opinion that this was caused due to the misery they felt at having been thrown away by their Government as being no longer of use.

Politicians can remain on the backbench for as long as they want, in the Australian labor Party so long as they vote for all ALP poliicies they can,are in nice, safe seats where they don't have to do anything other than nod their heads they can stay till they are in their late nineties, still getting Superannuation. Once members of the general Population reach 70 they are no longer entitled to Superannuation payments. Most older peopler have worked hard all their lives, have contributed to the Economy, have made few, if any, claims on Taxpayer's Money, have paid their Full Tax Obligations for many Decades yet as soon as they retire they suddenly become a Burden on Society, Irrelevant and to be punished by being incarcerated in some sort of Aged Care Concentration Camp at which the owners, mostly Religious Organisations such as the Anglican, Roman Catholic, Uniting, Lutheran, Baptist, Muslim and Jewish Religious Businesses, have developed diets for the incarcerated which cost no more than $AU6.10 per day per inmate using what they call Meal Replacement Diets to acheive this, all the while the Australian federal Government is pouring more than $AU23 Billion into the owners pockets every year. They all learned their lessons from the Nazi regime between 1933-1945.

What you are talking about is retirement age to either access superannuation or a government pension. I hate how the age has increased due to what the government perceives as "aging population". The old system of "voluntary retirement at 55" is much better than "work until you die" mentality which prevails today. (Obviously, voluntary retirement at 55 was to access superannuation and NOT welfare and you can no longer do this as the minimum retirement age is 10-20 years higher for most people currently working and this is awful).

In actuality it may be either or or neither. personally I retired when I had enough of my career which happened to be 65 but not really financially ready.

Voluntary retirement at 55 was the best system (this is for those with superannuation which everyone now has unless their employer is a scammer). You should be young enough to still enjoy life when you retire and not already dead OR so unwell/mobility issues etc that you can't enjoy the fruits of your labour.

There are extra taxes paid from earnings. Age is not always a sign of experience

Why should I have to wait until I am 60 to access my super (unless the government up the age again). and for those who are my age and qualify for a social security pension, you have to wait until you are 67 (unless the government ups it again). This is unfair.

Lots of people have to keep working if they can because they haven't saved enough $ to live comfortably as the pension is not much to live on. The retirement age will ever be increasing as we live longer and the aged population increases, because the younger generations are getting more and more selfish and want everything handed to them on a plate, plus there is a big downturn in procreation worldwide which means less future workers to pay taxes to help pay for pensions so govts are forced to increase the entitlement age.

I wanted to continue working.

The elderly (65+ even 80+) have been working or returning to work in numbers never seen before and the funding plans we once thought would be sufficient are being eroded faster than inflation can be pronounced. Wonderful medical and diagnostic procedures and improved diets have also enabled us to continue for longer than before, so we need to keep moving/working as best as we all can. I just think "retirement" is a misnomer or some kind of 'protracted vacation' , but at some point we may all have to pick up the shovel/mantle and give it another go...until death stops us! I'm also more hopeful to do only those things I like as I get older, so I can actually enjoy life and smile more. Working is not just for the young and a labourforce with all ages and pespectives may be very reflective of the wider societies we live in. ☺️

Can the employee(s) 'afford' to retire (based on her/his retirement benefits)? Does the employee(s) meet minimum age retirement limits? Does the employee meet other retirement requirements established by her/his employer?

Hard physical workers are worn out physically and others mentally. If there is a specified age I think this would help in many cases. If someone wants to continue working after that age it is up to them. However, I think businesses and governments wants everyone to work till we drop. One gets close to retirement age and the goal posts move. Australians contribute to their super as do their employers but that does not even keep up with inflation etc. Businesses go bust and the super has not been paid into the accounts. I think there always needs to be a government pension as not everyone works the long years and have the high wages required to have a decent retirement fund.

My expectations for the young generations should be ready in semi retire by early 40s. They should be smart in diversified investments n have dividends income. By the way, the government should have compulsory all working individual to contribute 5% gross income into their own superannuation plus employer guarantee super. All individuals should have sufficient 💰for their own retirement by early 60s and no one should have to rely on government aged pension. Other than the dole bludger. 😩
