Discussion of the Day
Save money
Cherry HAug 23, 22
I have changed my habit of spending money since the COVID-19 occurred.
Life cost has become too high, and that makes me wonder how to save money and plan for my future.
I go to Avondale Sunday market to buy eggs, vegetables and fruits instead of going to the supermarket.
Has your money spend habit changed? And how do you manage to save money in daily life.
Welcome to share your good ideas. Thank you

Prepare a list because it can reduce impulse buying. Buy more local products and help small businesses.

Always compare prices and look out for specials both in store and online. Learn recipes that can help minimise food waste.

As a fully self funded retiree I live off my savings and investments so there is no such thing as saving. In 2020 my income dramatically reduced but prices were pretty stable but since prices have begun to increase it's a worry as the money I have won't last as long as planned. I am now spending more at Aldi because the prices are less and I am buying more home brand products but am dreading the next electricity bill. I wish Albo would shut up and get on with what he promised like reducing electricity bills. He also said he would bring the cost of living down but so far I haven't seen him doing anything about that.

Always buy the special. We have 5 large supermarkets with 3 Klm of home, I will shop at all of them to get savings. I do freeze meals

We are in a similar situation here to you Greg. We make the most of being close to the majors by buying up on the half price items, comparing prices across the board and we buy in bulk too. On top of that we buy bulk meat purchases each month or so from the butcher.

I have not really change my spending habits that much just the way I spend it. I only buy meat when it is on special , I buy extra and freeze it. All bread goes in the freezer so no waste. All left overs frozen and used later. We have cut back on the amount of meat we eat to be healthy. In many cases frozen vegetables are cheaper than fresh, When fresh vegetables are at their cheapest buy more and freeze them. Start a garden. Buy smaller eggs by the tray. A cheap meal I love is baked beans or spagetti, You can buy it for under $1 at tin. Spice it up with sauce, onion, cheese. You can mix in an egg if you like or some left over cold meat. Dont forget you must treat yourself occasionally.

We have saved not so much money but food as we found that we used to waste a lot of food but now we don't waste anything and we have also started putting tea leafs from the strainer in the teapot opening the used tea bags and also keeping coffee grounds and putting them on the garden, we're using everything and recycling as much as we can ourselves at home. If the cost of living hadn't gone sky high we probably would be saving money but will the rate of inflation here we haven't.

Yes there are always funny shaped fruit and veg called the odd bunch a lot cheaper to buy and if it is a little funny just cut that bit off because the rest is okay to eat. Grow your own, if you have a potato that is sprouting. Plant it, I did. I got about 10 potatoes from 1. We would still like some chooks but not yet so we will have to wait for them. We still have tomatoes coming out of our ears and we have had to throw some out but not many. I just cut the bad bits off and still eat the bit that is fine. We try not to waste much. If you crumb any thing like steak or a chicken don't throw out all the flour and crumbs you have just used. Do what we do and turn it into an egg thing. I have no words to explain it. It's cross between a pancake and an omelette. I add more milk, an extra egg, the flour and the crumbs and I put in some grated cheese and herbs from the garden. It certainly adds to the meal and makes it more tasty. Try it and well if you don't like it you never have to do it again. It's worth a go and you don't have any thing to loose.

Yes I do some times do a tomato relish which is very yummy and I can get rid of some that way but we don't eat lunch so I have stopped making it. My Dad loves it though so I can do him some. We pulled the plant out and the green tomatoes are on top of the fridge where it is nice and warm so they will go red eventually and it's good because then we can use the red ones up first.

Utilities, telecommunication, insurance, health especially visiting just the GP you pay as much gap as the medicare fee and then some if you have a prescription. GP's have not had an increase to the medicare fee since 2014. How does that keep up with inflation. Everything with higher cost comes out of our pocket. I do not know how some people cope especially with families. Big business make bigger profits, just look at Commonwealth Bank, Harvey Norman etc. Then interest rates go up because the world is going into recession thanks to Putin. How is it the Pandemic only hurt small business and our cities look like ghost towns. But you know when I think like that I am grateful for the little I have and the poor people suffering floods, fires, famine and war. Heaven help us.

Saving is becoming harder but I still manage to put a little aside for that inevitable "Rainy Day"/ yes, it means I can't go out for coffee/tea as often as I would like to but I have become used to that now. So far as Costs are concerned I think it is all as a direct result of GREED. The supermarkets - All of them, not just the Big 2, started increasing their prices as soon as the Covid pandemic arrived. When things ran low in the shops they told us that supply was not a problem as their warehouses and distribution centres were full to over-flowing, the problem was shortage of delivery people to get the stock to the shops. As soon as that problem eased what happened? Deliveries started returning and UP went the prices - no matter what the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) said those prices increased anything from 15% to 22%. Probably other than those selling food no-one really knows what is in the basket of goods the ABS uses to get their totally inaccurate figures from. The Food sellers Deliberately keep the prices of those products low. This means claims for increased wages, pensions etc. are minimised.

I only buy what we need, Always think twice before buying anything extra. Made the children's clothes. Made all our own desserts. Only bought ingredients I couldn't make. No coffees at cafes. I make a list before I go shopping, so only go to the areas I want, I don't wander around looking at things. Stick to your list.

In my supermarket you will see; produce, sushi, deli, butcher, baker, dairy and finally frozen foods. One has to go in to the aisles to get biscuits, coffee, tea and other less essential items. The worst thing that you can do is to walk up and down every aisle. You will almost always buy things that you don't really need.

I really fi d it hard to believe that this is ME. I too make all my own meals from scratch and as a vegetarian that means that they are predominantly curries or stir fries which are heavy on the vegetables! I am just beginning to get my seeds into their pots to grow until I can replant them into the garden later on. I too do the surveys here for cash which helps ENORMOUSLY but with other companies for evouchers for Coles or Woolworths. It makes a HUGE difference! I don't go out very much which has more to do with pain and my disability than anything Covid related, but I have a car for which I am VERY grateful. It might be 20 years old and is currently at the mechanic for a pink slip and 3 new tyres, but its used mostly for a monthly shop either at Bathurst, Lithgow or Mudgee, depending upon how far I feel that I can go that particular day. Even though its not much to look at at least I own it and I prefer this to being in debt, which I'm not! I wish you a healthy, happy day!

If you go out for meals it will cost more as will buying pre prepared meals. When buying produce buy it loose. You get to choose what you buy and it is usually less expensive. Two exceptions to this rule are usually carrots and sweet potatoes. Make sure that you check this is not always true. I work in supermarket in Australia and this rule applies there. Cook meals in advance and freeze them to save time during the week.

I have a question about food waste as I have about 15 kilograms of potatoes from Coles, which were procured from the bins outside of the loading zones out the back of the store and I recievedthem a week ago.. Now I have been the grateful participant who has recieved from Second Bite and the other food waste programs which other supermarkets and bakeries have started over the last 5 years or so, and I have paid $2 for a bag of fresh fruit and vegetables back in 2019. Now for some UNKNOWN reason these potatoes and the other fruit and vegetables that were in this bin were NOT included in the Second Bite program and it wasn't because they were that bad as to be inedible! These and the other food items were shared among my daughter's friends and social group which included me. I REALLY hope that this is an aberration and that perfectly good food is NOT being dumped for dumpster divers like the person who procured these potatoes, some of which included several kilograms of organic as well as baby potatoes, perfect for potato salad. I ABHOR waste of any kind and am grateful for anything that somebody else might decide is past its use by date! Lastly, Bakers Delight throw away their unsold bakery items and while a lot goes to a charity like the Salvation Army, which is where I used to get free bread from. I haven't bought a loaf of bread or a bread roll for a couple of months this time round where I live now, due to another "friend" who goes to BD at the end of trading and takes off their hands as many bakery items as she can take which the charity has declined to take. I don't care that it's 2 or 3 days old when I get it as I slice the loaves and put the slices into sandwich bags which I then freeze and reuse again later. The bread stays fresh at less until I get it and I make many meals out of it. I'm curious to hear of any other stories you might have or insights into food waste control! Thank you Don. and take care now.

Woolworths give a lot of food to Ozharvest who provide meals for those in need. Perfectly good food does end up in the dumpsters but one hopes that this is not common. Any item baked in the store, such as bread rolls is sold at half price after 5:00 pm in preference to throwing it out the next day. I believe that at this point we are not allowed to give it away either. We used to do the $1 nd then $2 bags of fruit and vegetables that were not quite good enough but there were too many people just waiting for the cheap produce to come out. Many who could afford to pay for the quality stock would not so we had to get rid of it. For the bread that is a bit dry becsause of its age put it in the oven on the top shelf over a baking tray with water in it at about 120 celcius for a few minutes. This will add some life back to it. I hope this helps.

I admit that over several years of caring for my elderly FIL before his passing 4 years ago, that I knew what I could buy and when to get it cheaper and what charitable organisations were in what area and what I could anticipate buying or getting it donated. I want to give a quick plug for Anglicare here because if I don't do it now I'll forget to later. They, and I honestly don't know if it's every store but I think it's the larger ones at least, do a grocery bag for $12 which you pay and select from their pantry products such as long life milk, cereal, pasta, rice, tinned vegetables and sometimes fruit as well and assorted other pantry items. Some stores will also have fruit like bananas which are donated and as I have a dehydrator I will ask if I can take more if it's after a certain time or I know that by the look of them that they will be too mushy for me to get more than 1/2 the quantity which I can save. I worked out that on average I would end up with between $35 and $40 worth of product. I think that those of us over a certain age will ride these inflationary increases much better than the younger people who have grown up being able to take whatever they want in the store regardless of the price and have enough disposable income to keep purchasing, at least for a little while. I was born in the Western Suburbs of Sydney late in 1864 which makes me one of the last of the "baby boomers" generation when it wasn't fashionable to live there and as more families moved into the area more shops including the top takeaway restaurants such as KFC, Pizza Hut and McDonald's came into our local area, but we ate KFC as a REAL TREAT not because mum didnt want to cook dinner that evening. I know that my own 5 adult children are products of the "affluent " generation and they think nothing of going out for takeaway and ordering 3 different types of food costing $100 for 2. They ate well as children because I would go to Coles, we didn't have a Woolworths where my kids grew up until 12 years ago, near closing time and follow the person who was manually marking down the meat, often by 50%, and buy what I could freezing it for use over the fortnight.I am afraid that some tough life lessons are about to be learnt by our children and grandchildren about making do and being grateful that we have SOMETHING on our plates even if it's NOT our preferred food. I recall reading stories from the Great Depression when mothers would leave the kitchen when their children were going to eat so they wouldn't be tempted to eat their child's dinner while they had a cup of Bonox.in the hallway. Sorry for taking up so much space but I feel the urge to encourage in any way I can or educate people where they might find assistance with food services. We are about to walk down a very dark road into global famine where now will be seen as "the good old days". Take care Don!

Also don't forget to use your rewards program cards(flybuys, Woolworths). That's 3 × savings in one shop. I'm a Woolworths food tester(free food approximately every fortnight), product tester for main other companies, secret shopper, surveys and other online things.I grow varies fruits, vegetables and herbs, have solar, don't smoke or drink, enter heaps of competitions(and win plenty). Currently approx $250 or less a week is plenty for our family of 4 for all living costs. We have 3 cars and a fuel saving app helps to. Furthermore, my alimony is tax-free, since I get 1,000 a month from my ex-wife (and I get to write off 12,000 dollars a year on my income taxes - actually in my case 12,050 dollars). However, I APPRECIATE your concern :-))!

My financial goal (long term) is to make sure that I do not pay income taxes to the State of California and/or the federal government (USA) - LEGALLY. Which I can accomplish by NOT changing my spending habits. Furthermore, I have money in an HSA (Health Saving Account - which is tax free) to cover short-term health issues and long-term health issues. Early in my work-life (before I retired) I paid a financial planner to assist me in setting up a financial plan for me (on an ongoing basis till I retired) - for when I retired. Life is not fair for anyone. Hence, you have to set up short-term financial goals and long-term financial goals with the assistance of a financial planner.
