Vacation All I Ever Wanted
Holly CatMar 22, 25
Who doesn't look forward to a vacation? It's a time to explore, relax, unwind and enjoy. However, sometimes things don't go so well. From lost luggage, a hotel that claimed to be luxurious but was seedy, overcrowded everywhere, noisy, rude people, awful food, etc, can make our vacation not so nice.
What was your worst vacation?

Not sure which was best - diving in the Seychelles or in the Maldives.

Well long ago, I wanted my boyfriend (now husband) to experience a winter town since he grew up in an area that didn't snow. Being young and not caring about potential blizzard conditions, we took a road trip to Frankenmuth, MI. Now my husband was experiencing snow anyway since he recently moved to Michigan, but this is a cute, quaint Christmas town. The drive took a long time due to the heavy snow. We get to our hotel and the front desk staff informed us due to blizzard conditions, everything was pretty much closed, so we were stuck in our hotel room. The hotel restaurant was closed and there were only vending machines to get snacks from. By the time we decide to eat, our car is buried in snow. We ask the front desk and he advised us not to drive, but he said Burger King might be open lol. He called, and they were open. There was a Burger King down the street, but it was too cold and too much snow to walk there, so we cleaned off our car and drove down the street and went through the drive thru. We are both vegetarian, but thankfully, Burger King used to have salads. We were the only customers and got salads and fries and that was our dinner in our snowed in hotel room. We laughed about it saying Burger King saved us vegetarians lol. The next day, things were a little better, so we at least got to check out Bronner's Christmas Store and we were lucky they were open because we were practically the only ones there! Well, no more winter wonderlands for us as we moved out of Michigan over 20 years ago.

I went somewhere where the markets sell interesting food but there were flies everywhere. I don't like the flies on the food and on myself. 😊

When younger, almost got caught up in a potential stabbing. Luckily it did not happen that night, but the guy murdered someone a few months later

I have not had a bad one. I did go visit my sister in Melbourne 2 years ago and caught an RSV virus half way through but it did not ruin my holiday because we watched the little penguins on Phillip Island, saw a lot of wildlife, went to the markets , visited the casino and lots of other things too.... The virus was pretty gross but Melbourne was amazing!

When I was younger I just used to go and explore places..or sometimes decide to live there for a bit...my parents took me on vacations...so I really gave that up when I was 14......(it is really amazing just how many things you realise you will never do again thanks to your parents help and guidance) and now I stay with friends or relatives...weird eh?...I did go to Greece...and skied once in Austria...but everything worked out OK..so sorry Holly..in Austria I had hoped that I could use my German..as good practice...but I stumbled over a word..fell back into French..and for the rest of my stay I was the Belgian with the front desk..and they only spoke French to me ...you win some and you loose some..I failed being German but nobody knew I was from the UK....so that's good

It was terrible and put me off travelling for years. I had suffered a spinal injury which left me an incomplete paraplegic but I persevered and got some of the feeling and use back in my left leg but I have to be careful where I tread, which I sometimes forget. My husband and I decided we would go to Phuket, then Bangkok, Hong Kong and Shanghai, but it didn't start well at all. We stayed in a resort in Phuket that we had stayed at previously and had a great time but on this occasion it was undergoing renovations with the best part closed off and we were put in a smaller room where the occupants next-door were noisy well into the night. We discovered 3 or 4 families were there together and each night they left all of the children in the one room next to ours. When we complained about the noise we were told they were Arab people, that was the explanation. One day I was looking in the shop window, they had 2 or 3 shops inside the resort, and as I walked to the front I didn't notice the shop was actually on a step and my foot slipped off and I sprained my ankle. I had it bound at the clinic and after a few days I was able to walk on it by which time we were in Bangkok. One of my daughters-in-law wanted a leather handbag so I walked to one of the huge shopping centres in Bangkok but on the way back to the hotel I fell over. I don't know whether I tripped, slipped but whatever I hobbled back to the hotel where the hotel GP said I had sprained my knee. By late afternoon when my knee was the size of a football, wouldn't bend was out of this world painful so I got a taxi to the hospital. The X-rays said broken so I was put into a cast. The hospital rang everyday to see how I was but after 4 or 5 days the cast started to cut into my ankle so back to the hospital I went. My ankle was broken, although I have no idea how you break an ankle while in a cast. The doctor said I was not to continue to Hong Kong telling me to go home. So I arrived at mascot in a wheelchair and visited a specialist as recommended but 2 weeks later my foot began to swell and it hurt terribly and X-rays revealed my ankle was broken again but on the opposite side. I felt like locking myself inside my house and never leaving again. I think it took me about 5 years before I was ready for Hong Kong and Shanghai. Thank goodness for travel insurance. Don't leave home without it.

We had a friend ask to accompany him on a trip to Tassie. He had visited cities all over the world but had the quaint idea that Tasmania had little fields with rock walls as there are in England. I thought he was crackers but my partner and I travelled with him to all the parts he wanted to see. I had visited Tassie over quite a few years and just loved it every time I went. He didn't like anywhere we went except the wild west coast. Everything was not how he imagined it would be. I don't know where he got these ideas but, I still enjoyed another trip down there and it was all new for my partner to enjoy. Loved staying in all the planned places we had carefully organized for him.

Flying from Copenhagen to Heathrow and to connect at Gatwick for Washington DC. Had 3 hour gap. On arrival at Washington NO LUGGAGE. WHY. YOU didn’t give enough time for transfer. So got a motel and told to buy some clothes and keep receipts for refund. I sent my travel agent a post card and said IF I ever ask for a flight using BA send for funny car.on arrival at LA for Q flight home I was upgraded to BUSINESS CLASS. Seems the agent raised my issue with Q and as they shared flights they upgraded me. SO it pays to complain and you never know.

I think my worst vacation was when my then husband and I went camping with another couple who were close friends, and the husband was our boss! We woke up around 3 am freezing to find a three foot snow drift up against the tent. We packed up, and were going to leave, but the roads were closed, and we all had be back to work that Monday! Not so much fun on that camping trip, in Georgia! ;-D

The worst vacation that I ever had was a few years ago, when we rented a cabin by a lake, in the Adirondacks, in New York State. I was still having a hard time getting around after breaking my leg in 2020, so hiking was out of the question, for me. We were sharing the cabin with a couple of our good friends, which was great, but they brought their canoe, so they were out enjoying the lake, most of the time. Sometimes, they went for a hike in the mountains, and my husband went along, leaving me and our little dog. Fortunately, I had my Kindle and laptop to keep me entertained. I had hoped to visit some of the local eateries, but Bobby, our housemate, insisted on cooking dinner for us, so by the time our week was over, I was going stir-crazy from being cooped up for an entire week.

I recall that one time my car engine dropped a valve on the first day and we had to spend the whole week in a hotel room. It turned out the engine repair was finished on the day we were supposed to go home. About half way home it became obvious there was something wrong but we just powered on because we had no time or money for another repair. I had the repair done at a national chain repair shop in the U.S. because I wanted the warranty that the repair shop guaranteed it would be honoured in Canada. Well, the shop put a defective head on the car and the engine leaked until it was almost dry. Then the repair shop told me they wouldn't honour the warranty. After some very heated negotiations they finally relented and fixed the car correctly and at no charge. The lesson learned was that there is no way to predict a break down, go to a place where they offer a great warranty instead of Joe's Cheap Car Repair.

The Kaikoura earthquake in NZ we were down south in Mapua Nelson right on the beach there and we rocked and rolled. Earlier my husband had been out fishing and he came in saying The sea is doing strange things. We should have known as we had experienced earthquakes before but didn't think about it. Low and behold as we got into bed that night it hit we rocked and rolled were told to get away from the beach just incase. Thankfully my sister lived near by at the time so we all went Marae style. Couldn't get home as planned as the ferrie's were cancelled due to damaged docks. When we finally could get the ferry we went through 4.5 metre swells was AWFUL. But we were safe and alot of people have had a lot worse.

Second, I was diagnosed with Covid-19 and to top it off, the train I was supposed to catch from Edinburgh to London, threw in a cancellation so I had to go to London one day earlier. By the time I was negative, the tour ended.

At one tourist location we stopped in at, the men didn't have to pay anything to use the toilet. But the staff at the women's toilet was demanding $2. I had to go to the bathroom badly, but I didn't have $2 on me. I had the equivalent .25 cent coin. My husband came around to the women's entrance to wait for me and he saw the stressed look on my face. I told him what the woman demanded for payment. He walked into the women's toilet with me and told the woman No. He gave her the .25 coin (which was the normal fee to pay) and I used the toilet without being harrassed further.

We call it the holiday from hell. The bad luck continued after hubby got the train home and had alarms installed and the door repaired. There was an annoying noise coming from the ceiling constantly. After a few days of it driving us crazy we paid close attention and realised it was the smoke detectors. A few new batteries solved that. Then after a few days of my youngest daughter complaining of mild pains in the turmmy it became almost unbearable, so a trip to the doctor. No bulk billing so with all the other expenses it put a strain on the finances. Luckily nothing showed up. I would love another trip to Ettalong but I think it is a bad omen for me. No fond memories of that place which is a shame because I have heard that it is a lovely place.

The most picturesque little town all year round back then.My ex husband and I were travelling by car ,6 hour drive. I was very pregnant with our first child. 40 degree heat in summer. We had a minor accident with the car in the first 15mins,no apparent damage,so continued. We should have turned back then. The car broke down more times than I can count. Luckily we had insurance that offered roadside assistance. By the time we arrived we had spent 12hours on the road in the heat and had the car towed the last 80kms. All accommodation was already paid for,but left us with very little money and bad sunburn. Still wasn't horrible,it's was truly beautiful. We ate ice-cream,walked around town, waded though the Oven's river( which is melted snow and freezing any time of year). We had some food we brought with us. Funny that everything we planned went wrong, but just being there was refreshing. Young love..we didn't care, had nothing,no money,no car. It didn't matter.

We were camped in a particular area and a few people threatened us so we moved on. We also ended up on a route that motorhomes should not go on. It did not feel very safe. There were a few things that made the vacation memorable for the wrong reasons. There were also several things that made the vacation memorable for the right reasons. Overall, my family and I enjoyed our vacation in New Zealand.

Of course, I had one bad time away. My wife and I were playing in a golf tournament at the Lakelands golf course on the Australian Gold Coast when she became ill and died about 10 days later. Lost luggage is nothing compared to the loss of a loved one.

Met a guy at the backpackers I was staying (toga party night). We hit it off and decided to travel north together and make a bit of cash in Bunderberg, fruit picking, then spent some time in Airlie Beach where he drank and partied a lot and became abusive. Eventually I was picked up by police while running to get away from him in the middle of the night. Was taken to woman’s refuge and after a few days used the last of my money to get a bus ticket to Townsville to look for work. He tracked me down by ringing every backpapsrs hostel in Townsville asking for me by name pretending to be a family member needing to talk to me urgently. I managed to flee from him once again by hitchhiking to Cairns with just the clothes on my back. Thankfully, I managed to find work starting immediately and found accomodation run by incredibly kind people who allowed me to stay there without payment (till my wages came through) and then I paid them back. Ended up living in Cairns for 8 months and will forever be grateful to the wonderful and caring people of Cairns

We found out the luggage went to a more fun place than we did! Lucky luggage! The next day our luggage was delivered to our home. Another time we decided to drive to our vacation destination. We were behind a quarry truck and a big rock hit our wheel. We ended up the next day spending half the day at a dealership. Another time driving we were going down a road and 3 rabid dogs surrounded our car, jumping on it. It was in the middle of the night, Finally the owners slowly came out and called their dogs in,

Never travel alone with a toddler and think that's a good idea 🙄 Back in the day I went to one state visiting friends for a week then off to another . On the way to the airport mine was not feeling the best in the back seat ... It wasn't my carseat .l was contemplating pushing in the buttons on the kiddies 4 way seatbelt ,,and the consequences ,,( He was covered in it) lol My girlfriend who also had a toddler said " You can't do it can you?" I said " No!" "Don't worry " she tells me I've got it ..and her hubby would sort out the car . All this time I knew we were running late for the flight. She bolted inside and we ended running through the airport with this dripping child wrapped in plastic suitcase wrapping she'd got from the front desk ! I missed my flights .. 4 hrs sitting around . Next destination he's bus sick 2 days later .. then breaks out head to toe in chicken pox !

Always check everything from all angles and never go below 4 star accommodation. I have gone camping (never again although it was fun), caravaning (again fun but never again) and then as I got older into lovely hotels and on cruises etc. Have not been on a holiday away now for about 15 years unfortunately. Ah, maybe one day
