Fun Christmas Traditions
Joy L 68767Dec 22, 24
In our family, every year we would give the same presents.
My Dad would wrap up a potato in lots of newspaper and put it under the tree, one for me and one for my brother. He then did this for my daughters as well.
We always had one fun gift, One daughter always got a coffee mug, she has quite a collection now. The other always got funny underpants. I would search all year for both. My husband still gets a cigar (his one a year) and I get good chocolates.
What do you do that is unique to your family?

One year I had a box after eating the cherry candy I used to wrap my Son's coins in for his collection. He thought there was cherry candy in the box. One day he was craving cherry candy and opened it up and got such a shock he didn't know what to do. He called me and told me I had gotten him good The following year I wrapped him up 12 box's of cherry candy with the candy inside. lol. We still laugh about that.

One gift that my middle son always gets is socks. It's a joke that it wouldn't be christmas without his "box of socks"

I find Christmas depressing. There is no joy anymore, just sorrow and sadness and each year it gets worse and worse. Merry Christmas to all.

Growing up we would always have a pillowcase at the end of our beds. it would be filled with some basics for school, chocolate coins and other small things. We would then have one special gift under the tree. I was one of five kids.

We were poor so the best tradition we had was opening gifts on Christmas morning! Other than our birthdays, it was the only time we received gifts. We had to wait until Dad got up before we could open anything, and he was so slow! He showed little enthusiasm for anything, but in his way, we knew he prized Christmas morning. He wouldn't even look at his gifts. Mom did the shopping so he had no idea what we were getting for the most part. As I got older, we had a nice breakfast together irbefore opening gifts was always something special. I remember every hour knocking on their bedroom door to see if I could get up yet! It was so exciting to believe in Santa. Now it's just me getting up alone with no plan for the day. Some years, I buy myself gifts so I have something to open like the old days. It's bittersweet with fond memories of years ago, and the depression of missing those times and no way to change them with no family.

I have severe anxiety, and I can't be in a group of people. Thanks for the suggestion. I have been advised of places to go, but I can't go. There are a few places that I can go with caution, but it's so cold and snowy out, and I have a bad back and cleaning off the car is difficult. Truthfully, the holidays bring out my depression, and all I can do right now is sleep. I have been feeling physically sick, and this happened to me last year the day after Christmas. I was sick for months and ended up having pneumonia even though I had two of the vaccine shots for pneumonia. Sorry if I sound like I'm making excuses! This is who I am, and I'm a lot of fun when I'm with people I'm comfortable spending time with. My caregiver and I are having a party on Monday and exchanging gifts with her and her dog that I love so much! I'm not the grinch!!! LOL You sound a lot like me always wanting to help everyone. Sometimes I can, and sometimes, it's "Oh well, I tried." God bless you and Merry Christmas, Edith!

I no longer do Christmas. No family that are worth celebrating with. This Christmas I will be with my elderly mother who the aged care facility are starving to death and if I don't step in she will die.

You don't know just how right you are. My mother was in aged care and stopped eating. I asked for her to see a doctor but nothing came of it and she was taken to hospital but in such a emaciated state the doctor said she would be unable to absorb any drugs. She was sent back to the nursing home to receive palliative care but passed away 3 days later. That was just over 2 years ago but it still makes me angry to this day. All the best with your mother.

I'm so sorry about the loss of your Mum. You cannot trust these shitty doctor. The one my mother has says she has stage 3 bladder cancer, according to her medical records she doesn't! And now she is being isolated because she has scabies from head to toe!! They are not treating it, and she will end up with infection .I am going to camp beside her bed, I have been told the facility can call the police to remove me. They'd better not!!!

That sounds terrible and I am so sorry for you. How did they let your mother catch scabies? Sounds like the nursing home my mother was in, no-one really cared. I visited mum one afternoon and she told me she hadn't had any breakfast so I asked one of the workers, she said my mother had been given toast because that is what she had asked for. They used to ask a 90 something woman what she wanted for breakfast suggesting nothing. They would leave butter and jam etc. in those little packets which my mother couldn't see because she was blind with Macular degeneration. They gave her drinks in sippy cups which she wasn't ever able to find. They were useless. Now they want more money from residents. What a joke!

Other residents are scratching too! The food is appalling and stinks. I am going to take my egg cooker with me and will make her boiled eggs. The staff in these place just cover their butts, and that's if they can speak English!!! The guardians have advised me that the matter regarding the scabies has been reported to the Aged Care Complaints commission (initiated by me). At least while I am there I will be documenting, photographing etc and I have bought a few tubes of the scabies cream. The thing is, we must keep reporting these places!!! My Mum's water jug was empty and her cup full of mould. I won't stop until the GP and his hoomies, and those in their ivory towers are dealt with. What I found with these morons, is that when the issues become too hot, they suddenly leave. It's like whakamole. Pox on them. Im hoping I will make a good case to move Mum down to Melbourne to be near me, so that I can crack the whip if needed. At least I can ensure that she has adequate food, drink, correct medication and medicos who still believe in the Hippocratic oath.

My problem was that I didn't document anything and when I lodged a complaint with the Aged Care Commissioner they sided with the nursing home. There is NO impartiality. Hope it works out for you.

well I have documented everything, filmed, photographed etc. The guardians should be chasing this up, it is costing me money I don't have. These bloody aged care place know where the loopholes are, and all of these so called place to report them to are just as bad. I will investigate further once I csn move Mum down to be near me. I will be giving ACAT a serve too, you can't write a whole bunch of shite about someone and not be accountable.

The door is always open for family, friends and newcomers dropping in. Everyone contributes to the meal. This Christmas there is a baby of 6 months attending the gathering and a just got engaged young couple. So much to be thankful for. Best wishes to all of you in the land of Rewardia. We have become a family of sort this past year. Although not always agreeing with each other, we still have shared a lot, had some good times and hopefully have learned something along the way about each other. Thank you. oooo bfn

Of course we eat too much and then need to spend all next year loosing the extra weight we have gained (hopefully.) I used to do home made gifts like Anzac Cookies or Shortbreads as all of us have what we need and gifts are hard to think of. This year it is shop brought shortbreads, chocolates and a few other little goodies. Just some fun things like Scottie dog shaped shortbreads, they are too cute.

When I was a kid at home, my Mum made our own Xmas puddings and always hid coins in it. I did similar for my kids, growing up. Is this still done I wonder?

The whole house was decorated, not just the tree. It looked magical. The room with the Christmas tree/ presents was closed with a big patterned glass door, not to open til our parents were up. We would look thru it in the morning trying to see what was under the tree, but all we could see was a mixture of Christmas lights and assorted gifts blurred by the glass. To us it added to the excitement and beauty of Christmas. The night before we went to midnight mass, come home and exchange a small gift each, parents and grandparents would have eggnog then bed.

We don't give out presents but we come together to a huge BBQ with all the trimmings, usually the weekend before the 25th. Our family is not that religious but we come together for the concept of Christmas. (Joy/life) Jesus was born nowhere near the 25th of December if you follow the scriptures. It always fascinates me that the world is conned into celebrating a made up day.

If you do celebrate Christmas, then spend a small fraction of what you buy for others and give to a charity as a real present to him.

Do it countless times on any or all of the other 364 days of the year. But if you do it on the 25th of December and only on the 25th...you are doing it on a made up day. I'm not that religious but I do read. It is believed that Jesus was born around March/April. Just like the Queen (now Kings) birthday holiday which we also celebrate...it's not actually on the real day.

For those who are getting tired of my speaking about Jehovah and his Bible, bypass my posts, because I'm just getting started! Our Campaign now is to tell as many as we can about Jehovah's Kingdom coming to the earth soon, and that's what I'm doing. The only prophesies not fulfilled so far are about the United Nations turning against False Religion, and when the Nations are saying, "Peace and Security". Be on the Watch! Next is the Great Tribulation, then Armageddon. Then Jehovah's Kingdom! ;-D

There was always an assortment of pies to choose from. She would bake fruit cakes for the older siblings and their families as not too many of us younger ones like fruit cake. There was always a huge turkey. I do not know how my father ever got it into the roaster. Being Ukranian there was cabbage rolls as well as mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy and a vegetable. Was always a nice family gathering

Not everyone is able to make it every year but whoever can will be there. My siblings take turns hosting. My children and and granddaughters get together as close to Christmas as possible for all to attend. Last year it was a couple of days after Christmas but that doesn't really matter. Having everyone together is very meaningful for each one of us. I don't remember us ever having a cut tree for Christmas; always the green sticks stuck in a green pole artificial one when we were kids, but the artificial ones are SOOOO pretty now, there is really NO excuse to kill a tree for a couple of weeks of 'it smells so nice'. Everyone knows by now how much a tree does for our well-being living out in the wild as they should be. Leave them where they belong and while you're at it, plant a few in the spring or fall next year:) Merry Christmas to each and every one.... person and tree.

It's like giving someone flowers. I stopped and now buy pot plants than can be planted in the garden etc. and always a native. However, there are places that you can buy a Xmas tree in a pot and put it outside and bring it back in each year. Hopefully it does not outgrow the house. We need more greening in our cities. Look at what Singapore did. It brings down the temperature, makes the area more aesthetic and helps birds etc. So at Christmas, why not give a tree to plant. I am sure there are areas everywhere where greening is happening and they would appreciate the help.
