Thoughts on handwriting?
SaskiaNov 07, 23
Does anyone still write in cursive, and if you were taught cursive handwriting, when did you go to school? I'm curious to know when it started to get phased out, as I was taught to print my letters in primary school in the 00's.
What are your thoughts on how handwriting is now, especially with digital technology becoming more commonplace? Or how do you think handwriting etiquette evolve over time?

Kids today are amazed when they watch me write when all they can write is their signature. What would happen with communication today if an emp set us back a decade os so and all electronics were rendered useless?

I think handwriting and cursive are still important. In order to read older documents in cursive, students should know how to write in cursive. Even with technology, there will always be a need for cursive writing. I was taught cursive around 3rd grade.

I haven't thought about that for years but you are right. Now with PC's nobody writes anymore.

I was taught cursive for I think up until grade 3 then we were taught to add little runs at the end of letters.

I started school in55 and we always told that we had to print for the first 2 years but there after we had to running writing, my Dad had a beautiful curvy writting, I use to try and copy and use to get told off because that was not how they wanted us to write, thank goodness for typewriters

I learned cursive in the '60's. Back then my writing style was admired by some, and many close friends and family asked me to write and address wedding invitations and the like. Nowadays it has degraded quite a lot, with the advent of keyboards and also the shaky hand syndrome of later years!

All I can say that I love writing especially with fountain pen. Wish that children would write more by hand - the enjoyment of filling the paper with letters! Printed or cursive, handwriting is IMPORTANT.

We called it "writing" in 70s NZ, as opposed to printing. We were allowed to write in ink when we had mastered it. We eventually used ballpoint pens but I enjoyed using a fountain pen at school.

We were taught to write using cursive writing when I went to school, with real ink, but it was called running writing. Biro's were definitely not allowed. I have wondered why people no longer use running writing instead choosing to do what I call printing.

Hi - I remember learning cursive in the 2nd and 3rd grade which was 1983 and 1984 for me. I believe handwriting is essential however these days it seems it's not as important to be learned like it used to. Everyone nowadays, esoecially the younger generation only know how to text and email, which is unfortunate but it's the reality in which we live.

I never learnt cursive writing at school. Printing was the way, first with a pencil and later with the biro. Emphasis was on readability. I did like the skill involved in cursive writing, very artistic

It needs to be stressed and (re)taught in schools since illegibility is a sign of lack of education, strangely enough.

I right running writing however I had an assistant when I was volunteering & had to print as she could not read my writing. Running writing is quicker, my brother was a school teacher when printing writing was being introduced he had to learn how to print & join it up his lovely hand writing suffered. How you write does not assist with spelling

I went to school in the 50s, so we spent hours learning cursive. Many years later, I got a job as a teacher aide and discovered that schools no longer taught cursive at all. Kids could no longer write their names in cursive. When I thought about all the documents that I have had to sign in my life; driver's license, car loan, mortgage loans, marriage license, birth certificates for my children, etc.,I was appalled. People can just scribble any old thing on the computers that have overtaken our lives. There is no such thing as a personal signature anymore. I once messed up my electronic signature for a charge card and the cashier said "That's OK, I never check anyways". It's no wonder that there's so much fraud!. The other thing that upset me was learning that kids today aren't taught how to tell time on an analog clock! If the clock isn't digital, they can't tell what time it is. Most of them can't even do simple math without a calculator. It's a shame.

Therefore my writing isn't very neat and it some times can be on a slant too. I went to school in the 60's but it would have been around before that. I still remember the book we used - top blue line two red lines and a bottom blue line. f h l b d k went up to the blue line and body between the red lines. g j p q y down to the blue line and body between the red lines. It was a very neat way of writing and once I was just using an ordinary exercise book joining up the letters was very easy. I am old now so dont know what they teach in school but I still try and write clearly with crossing t's dotting i's . It is easier than using a keyboard or modile phone and more personal.

Do Adults really want their handwriting to look like that of a 10 year old? For their writing to be almost identical to everyone else's? This is political correctness gone stark raving mad. Everyone who can still use Cursive writing displays a bit of themselves for, a bit like fingerprints, everyone's cursive is completely different to everyone else. The tragedy is that now, thanks to computers etc. no-one seems to actually hand-write letters for it is all done on screen. I, and my siblings, when at boarding school, always looked forward to the Mail, when we saw the envelope we knew who it was who was writing solely because of their Unique Cursive Writing style. That has all disappeared now and I think the world is a sadder place because of it.

In Ontario they are starting to teach all elementary pupils cursive again. My grandchildren are very excited about this new development.

I do still have one pen-pal in England and I do write with pen and paper every so often so I do not forget how. I also send cards in the mail- gasp- with actual writing. It is good to have this skill.

I like writing, but I use my computer and writing is difficult to use on a computer. I use forte more than anything else, sometimes using something that to me looks more fun and relaxed That is just me.

I still use it most of the time. My kids aged 11 and 9 did not learn hand writing in school as they do not teach it any more however I thought them at home. I feel like even if it is not used in school any more it is still something they should know at least how to read it and sign their names. As Verna mentioned the younger crowd now only print their names as signatures and that is not good.
