Reading all your comments and speaking to my nephews who are uni graduates in computer engineering, some technical advances are coming that are troubling, a harsh reality! One can only be grateful for the glimmers: the staff at the supermarkets who greet you and still pack your shopping, the bank teller who greets you and directs you to the appropriate teller, the family who still deliver spray free/organic fresh fruit and veggies, and I live in Auckland, NZ…

If I only have a few items, I use the self checkout, it's quicker. Same at fast food restaurants, if there is a self order option, I use them too.

There's a fine line between convenience and laziness.

When I visit the shops (KMart or Coles) I always go the counter where a Team Member can serve me...just trying to keep someone's job!!

Technology is ok in moderation but it is now getting to the point of ridiculous I am sick of trying to do an online shop with supermarkets as being older I find supermarkets hazardous what with the stock trolleys and people walking around on their phones several times I have nearly been knocked over by people not watching where they are going, but so many times items are shown as out of stock or will be available on another date, other times they are shown as being available and when you check later there is a message they are out of stock then they cease stocking items you like and want Coles have stopped selling Australian grown peas, tried the others and was horrified to find they are sourced from numerous places and were unedible, found a Tasmanian cream which is the only one with no additives so yruly pure cream but now Coles and Woolworths have ceased to stock it - so much for supporting Australian products. We badly need more supermarkets not owned by these two money hungry ones.Edited 06-Sep-24 20:07pm

Self service is great. Just ask the lady in Bathurst who went into an Aldi store, collected a trolley and loaded an $1800 electric bike into it and proceeded to the self service checkout. Then waving a receipt she proceeded to the carpark where she put the bike together before hopping on it and riding away. Turns out she didn't pay for it instead waving a receipt she had found somewhere. Then there was the man who stuck a snickers barcode to his palm and as he passed the steak, washing machine tablets as well as other items scanned his palm instead of the barcode on the items. He did it as least 4 times before someone caught on. All in all he made off with almost $400 worth of groceries. I'm sure paying an employee would cost less than what is being stolen daily.

Yes modern technology is getting a bit scary. I like to have a bit of a chat with the cashier since they all seem to know me which I think is great, when they have the promotions/collections for kids they always give me extra which is sweet. I find I don't spend as much with cash I just find it easier that way. They say change is good I'm trying to find the good but failing dismally. With the unemployment rate in Australia and the new ways you need to find work, if you get assistance, it is going to be extremely hard even for school leavers. Bring back the old days we would have fun then.

When I go shopping, I like to pay $50 cash & the rest of the docket on the card. THEY are talking about the country gong cashless & everything is on the card, but what happens if you do that & all your money is tied up with the card & you suddenly experience an outage or something similar, how do you pay for your goods. Do you give the shop attendant an O.I.U saying you will pay it next time if there is a next time. God help the future generations.

Supermarket checkouts are the bane of my existence. I need humans because I cannot use the automated machines.

I mostly only go to a serviced checkout, we like to have a chat to the cashier( if I can call them that because they don't have much cash)and I always get extra cash because a lot of places charge if you use tap and go.

Only the lazy do not understand that is is a TRAP.

I prefer to use self-check out at the grocery store because I make sure that I am charged for what I am buying, I know that I am not buying organic vegetables at twice the price. I never use Instacart or the like because I am very choosy and I prefer to select my own produce and fresh meats and bakery items. Packaged items would be OK to have someone else select, but I want to pick out my fresh stuff.

I agree but at my age I'm too old, too tired to fight the big supermarkets. I just wander about picking up this and that and pay with my little plastic card because there is always a large number of people looking for a human to take there money. There does not seem to be much joy in being a cashier these days.

Thank the Liberals for this disaster. It was the Liberal Party who made it necessary for us all to have bank accounts if we wanted to get any form of payment from the Feral Government. It is also the banks who are leading the way in sueing the telco's when the systems go down and they can make no transactions which means that calshless is as useless as Tits on a Bull.

Banks are pushing for no cash as well as stores. Cash is still legal currency. Soon cheques will go. Banks are closing every day and no service from those still open. They want people to use ATMs.

If this is the scenario we will have massive warehouses emptied and unemployed people. We cannot afford to buy goods and services and banks will not exist as there are no jobs, money and services. Self check out is good if one has only a few products to buy but not good when we are doing our fortnightly shop. I try not to buy things online too much and the little things I have have been okay. Prefer to see what I am buying, touch it, feel it. Having an app is good to see if some thing is in stock so we can then change our shop if a shop doesn't have what we want to get, example Bunnings we can either go to Warwick or Toowoomba and considering Bunnings Warwick is only a miniature shop yes we find we end up needing to go to Toowoomba. Now why on earth they didn't put in a decent Bunnings store at Warwick beats me. It is very frustrating at times. Another thing that gets me is when some thing is low in stock and you get there and there isn't any because the people are still in store with the product you wanted. Maddening absolutely.

I only shop in store and use cash if this happens I will be lost its not right we should be able to shop in stores that way we can touch what we want I will not shop were they dont have a person at the check out and can serve me

It wouldn't be so bad with all this technology if we as the customer get items cheaper but that is not the case at all. So big business save money as they are not employing as many staff but we the customer are doing their work and paying more for the items we buy such as groceries.

I hate self-check out because it seldom works correctly and then I have to wait for someone to come and help me and it ends up taking longer.

The lack of customer service will bite enterprises in the bum eventually as complaints will escalate and media will draw attention to the dissatisfaction we experience in this "self serve/autobot that is unhelpful/can't get a human cost cutting culture" which is actually spending more money on automation AND fixing the problems with automation than it would have cost them to have a human face actually helping and interacting and taking ownership of problems.

I do not believe human factor will be dissolve we may have to make the product and the trucks pick up where we live therefore living with manufacturing by doing it ourselves and sending it on its way

And no jobs for we stupid humans so no wages to buy all the products from the short sighted company management. Scientists and tech love all the gadgets and think they are so clever but even I can see where all this will head. Bring back the 70's when we were served, we went to shops and actually handled the products and tried on clothes etc. we had passbooks and we went to the bank tellers to take our money out of our accounts etc. and so much more. We did not pay to take our money out either. Fees have been placed on everything which has added up in billions of dollars of profit for banks. The future is not looking all that bright to me.

This is why businesses need to drop their prices as they don't need to pay as many employees as we the customer are becoming free employees. Even at the beer store they make you count your own cans. Why are prices always soaring upwards and rarely ever going down ? It's because of GREED. Millions in profits isn't good enough, now they want Billions in profit. It's disgusting how many businesses don't care if you're struggling. We need to stop spending and demand the prices of everything start going down. It's the only way. I feel sorry for future generations to come. How much will everything cost 20 years from now ?

I really don't mind checking my groceries out or other things. I love by the credo I'd rather do it myslf anyway
